A steampunk outfit for a man is built from a shirt, waistcoat, trousers, coat, hat and boots, with a cravat, pocket watch and goggles to follow. As of October 2026, the Historical Emporium pieces total about $483 without a coat, about $576 with a lab coat and about $676 with a frock coat. Thrift stores and costume shops can supply a man’s outfit for roughly $35 to $80. There is no correct steampunk costume; the character chosen decides the coat.

  • Shirts $68.95 to $79.95; canvas vest $59.95; canvas trousers $59.95
  • Coats: canvas duster $99.95 to $147.95, frock coat $193.95 to $199.95, Inverness $229.95
  • Hats: derby $71.95; costume-shop bowler $19.99

Men’s steampunk is the easier department to buy: the pieces are the ordinary stock of Victorian and Edwardian dress, and a good period outfitter sells every one of them at a published price. The question is which to buy first, and the answer begins with a character. The wider survey is in our guide to steampunk clothing; the first-outfit order is in how to dress steampunk. This page proposes a gentleman’s build.

Of Characters, and What Each One Wears

Historical Emporium matches the persona to the garment. Gentlemen wear bowlers and top hats “with or without gears”, silk or velvet waistcoats, tailcoats for formal looks, high-collar or wing-tip dress shirts and fall-front trousers. Mechanics and inventors wear collarless cotton work shirts, fly-front canvas trousers, four-pocket canvas vests, lab coats and laced boots with visible hardware. Aeronauts and air pirates wear ruffled shirts, with a leather aviator helmet for the former. An explorer takes a pith helmet.

The costumer behind Historical Sewing makes the point that unlocks all of this: steampunk is not a real historical period, so no costume is the correct one. The persona is the only discipline, and it is enough.

The Shirt, Waistcoat and Trousers

These are the foundation, and the pieces most easily found secondhand. At Historical Emporium, as of October 2026, dress shirts cost $75.95 to $79.95 and work shirts $68.95 to $75.95; the Classic Canvas Work Vest is $59.95, tweed vests $82.75 to $91.95 and jacquard vests $71.05 to $78.95; Classic Canvas Trousers are $59.95, Regency Fall Front $86.95 and tweed trousers $96.95. Waistcoat fashions changed with the decades: bright figured silks in the 1830s and 1840s, tartan in the 1850s, wool in the 1860s, three pockets usual in the 1870s.

Coats: Frock, Duster, Greatcoat

The coat declares the character, so it is worth knowing the history. The frock coat was the main day coat of the 1830s and 1840s, replaced by the morning coat in the 1850s as the lounge jacket arrived; from the 1860s the tailcoat was evening wear only; and the Ulster, a long belted travel overcoat, appeared in the 1870s. The duster is Edwardian rather than Victorian: a motoring garment in cotton, linen or pongee silk, in tan or khaki, to protect clothes from dust.

Prices at Historical Emporium, as of October 2026: Classic Canvas Duster $99.95 and Canvas Duster $147.95; Callahan Frock Coat $193.95 and the Victorian Double-Breasted Frock Coat $199.95; Inverness Coat in herringbone $229.95; Norfolk Tweed Jacket $174.95; Mad Scientist Lab Coat $92.95. HalloweenCostumes.com offers a Steampunk Adventurer Costume for men at $69.99 to $84.99, though it is synthetic and a base rather than a finished look. Our coat guide is steampunk coats for men.

Hat, Goggles and Boots

The Victoria and Albert Museum records that the top hat was the main gentleman’s headwear of the early nineteenth century, peaked in the 1840s and 1850s, and was mostly formal by the 1880s; the bowler appeared in the 1860s for informal wear. Historical Emporium’s Deluxe and Tall Wool Derbies are $71.95 and top hats range from the Regency at $81.95 to the Victorian at $117.95; HalloweenCostumes.com lists a Black Velour Bowler at $19.99. Goggles are optional: Historical Emporium’s Glacier pair is $37.95, and they sit on the hat band in company. See steampunk hats and goggles.

For boots, the outfitter advises protective lace-ups for mechanical characters and satin or tweed spats over modern black shoes on a budget. Its Captains Mid-Calf Costume Boots are $82.95, Burnett faux leather boots $80.95, Long Leather Riding Boots $269.95 and button spats $39.95. The thrift alternative is combat boots. More in boots, spats and gaiters.

Neckwear, Watch, Gloves and Cane

Historical Emporium’s Classic Cotton Cravat is $20.95, the Regal Satin or Cotton Cravat $24.95 and paisley ascots $32.95. A quartz pocket watch is $34.95, premium quartz or mechanical $102.95 to $139.95. Leather gauntlets are $49.95, and canes $66.95 to $94.95. At a costume shop a walking cane is $9.99. We discuss these further in steampunk accessories.

Errors to Avoid

The commonest error is modern footwear beneath a period outfit; the second is a single steampunk article upon an otherwise modern costume. Gears glued on for their own sake add little; the outfit should first read as a character, and the brass may follow. A plain waistcoat, hat and boots carry inexpensive goggles better than costly goggles carry jeans.
