Editorial Policy and How We Research
This page sets out how the articles on steampunkary.com are researched, written, checked and corrected. The site is written in the manner of a Victorian illustrated periodical; the facts in it are held to a modern standard.
Why the articles show no footnote numbers
Every article is written with numbered references, and the editors check each one against its source before publication. On the published page, however, the numbers are removed and the source list moves to a single Sources page, where every article has its own entry listing each source, its publisher and the date it was consulted. Each article ends with a link to its entry.
We made this choice for the reader’s sake. A field guide to dress and making reads more like a well-kept catalogue than a thesis, and a column of small numbers does little for someone choosing a pair of goggles. In the text we name a source in words where it matters (“the National Gallery of Victoria holds a pair dated 1895 to 1905”), as the periodicals of the period did. A few reference pages whose subject rests on its sources, such as a contested date or a definition, show their numbered references in the text and their own list at the foot. The Sources page is kept out of search engines by design; it is there for readers who wish to look into a matter for themselves.
Prices, shops and events
Prices, stock, shop listings and convention dates change. Articles state them as of the month they were checked (“as of October 2026”) and phrase them so a reader knows to confirm before buying or traveling. Every article is re-checked at least every six months and carries an updated date. Amazon and Etsy prices are never written into an article by hand; see the affiliate disclosure.
Safety
Any page that involves a tool, paint, solvent, heat, electricity, a blade, a prop weapon or a corset has a short section on safety, written from the manufacturer’s instructions or an official safety body and cited like any other fact. Costume goggles are not eye protection, and the pages say so where it matters. Nothing on this site is medical advice.
What the site does not do
- It does not claim first-hand experience it does not have. The editors may say “we checked” of a page or a price they looked up; they do not say they tried something on, built it or tested it unless a page names who did.
- It does not invent products, prices, ratings or quotations. Quotations are short, credited and few.
- It does not accept payment for coverage or for placement in the Outfitters’ Catalogue. Affiliate links are disclosed on the affiliate disclosure page and on every page that carries them.
Use of AI tools
Articles carry the byline Nathaniel Toule, the Gazette’s editor, which is the editorial byline of the steampunkary.com team at the publisher, Webhaus LLC. It is not the name of a real person. Research, drafting and fact-checking are done with the help of AI research and writing tools under the direction of that team. Every figure and every cited source in a draft is checked against the source before publication, claims that cannot be traced to a source are removed, and each article is edited by a person. Webhaus LLC is responsible for everything published.
Corrections
Errors are corrected as soon as they are confirmed, and the article’s updated date changes. To report one, write to the address on the contact page with the article title and, if you have it, the source that contradicts it.
