Plus-Size Steampunk: Corsets, Sizing and Where to Shop
Plus-size steampunk: corsets sized to 46, a bustle skirt to 3X, costume kits from $29.99, and how to measure; prices as of October 2026.

Plus-size steampunk is a matter of choosing makers who size honestly and measuring before ordering. As of October 2026, Orchard Corset says its plus-size corsets cover sizes 34 and up to 46, Historical Emporium sizes its twill bustle skirt from XS to 3X, to a 42-inch waist, and HalloweenCostumes.com lists plus-size steampunk costumes from $29.99. Corset makers disagree on how far below the natural waist to order, so the reader should follow the chart of the shop she buys from. A costume corset is for an evening, not for training.
- Plus-size costume kits: $29.99 and $39.99 (on sale from $59.99); plus-size petticoats $15.99 to $29.99
- Orchard Corset: plus-size corsets for sizes 34 to 46, with the same steel boning as the standard range
- Orchard’s reduction guide: 4 to 7 inches under a natural waist below 38 inches, 7 to 10 inches above it
- Dark Knight Armoury: order 3 to 4 inches below the natural waist
- Historical Emporium’s bustle skirt: waist charts of 27 to 42 inches, hips not listed

A reader who searches for a plus-size steampunk costume will find shops aplenty and very little to read. None of the competing pages we examined gave a priced, sized treatment. We confess that the primary sources are thin too: the makers publish size charts, but few write advice. What follows is therefore built on those charts and on what the sellers themselves say, and we mark where they disagree. The outfit itself is described in our guide to steampunk clothing; the women’s pieces in steampunk outfits for women.

Of Measuring, Before Ordering
Orchard Corset’s sizing page asks for four measurements, taken without clothing over them and in a supportive bra: the underbust, at the bra line, parallel to the ground; the natural waist, where one bends side to side, usually about one inch above the navel; the upper hip, at or just below the hip bone; and the torso length, seated upright, from beneath the breast to the top of the thigh. Keep the numbers; every chart below begins with them.
Corset Sizing, Where the Makers Differ
A corset is not sized like a dress, because reduction is built into it. The makers do not agree on how much.
| Maker | What it advises |
|---|---|
| Orchard Corset | For a natural waist under 38 inches, order 4 to 7 inches smaller; over 38 inches, 7 to 10 inches smaller; for fashion or back support only, 3 to 5 inches smaller. Newcomers should choose a larger size and work down. A 29-inch waist orders a size 24 |
| Dark Knight Armoury | Order 3 to 4 inches below the natural waist; a size 26 fits a 29 to 30 inch natural waist; recommended for heights from 5 ft 2 in |
| Luxe Noir | Measure the natural waist and order near it; a gap of one to two inches at the back is normal |
The advice is not contradictory so much as it is addressed to different corsets and different wearers, which is exactly why one should follow the chart of the shop she buys from and not carry a size between shops. Orchard says its plus-size corsets, for sizes 34 and up, run all the way to 46, and that every style on its steel-boned page is available in extended sizing, fitted the same way with the same steel boning. The listed prices on that page run from $79 to $117 as of October 2026; we did not verify whether extended sizes cost more.
Torso length matters as much as the waist. Luxe Noir notes that a shorter torso should avoid longline styles, which dig at the hip when seated. Orchard offers waspie, standard and longline cuts.
Steel Boning and the Busk
For a fuller figure the construction counts for more, not less. Dark Knight Armoury’s brown brocade underbust, which costs $65 to $75 as of October 2026, has ten spiral and four flat steel bones, cotton lining and a metal busk. Overbust and underbust differ chiefly in what they cover: the underbust is worn over one’s own blouse or bra and is Luxe Noir’s choice for beginners. See steampunk corsets explained.
A Word on Safety
A costume corset is for an evening, not for training. A doctor at the Cleveland Clinic says waist trainers do not permanently reshape the waist, should not be worn overnight or on consecutive days, and should be limited to a couple of hours at a special occasion; more reflux, difficulty breathing or leg swelling are reasons to stop. A corset maker’s safety page advises consulting a doctor first, especially with hypertension, certain hernias or gastrointestinal inflammation; loosening the corset at any sharp pain; and not exercising in one. This applies at every size, and we add no medical advice of our own.
Skirts, Petticoats and Costume Kits
The Historical Emporium twill bustle skirt in black is sold in sizes XS to 3X at $82.36, reduced from $102.95, as of October 2026. It is 100 percent cotton twill, unlined, with an elastic waistband and a length of about 40 inches. Its chart gives waist sizes up to 27, 29, 32, 34, 37, 41 and 42 inches from XS to 3X, but the page lists no hip measurements, so the reader should confirm with the shop before buying. For the history and styling of the bustle, see steampunk bustle skirts.
HalloweenCostumes.com lists a Plus Size Steampunk Lady Costume at $39.99, on sale from $59.99, and a Plus Size Steampunk Costume at $29.99, with plus-size petticoats at $15.99 to $29.99, as of October 2026. These are ready-made kits for an evening and a base to build on; we did not find their fabric or sizing details in the listing.
Building the Rest of the Outfit
The sources we have do not give plus-size advice for hats, boots or blouses, and we decline to invent it. What they do give is the logic of any steampunk outfit: choose a character, then let the pieces follow. Historical Emporium’s guide matches work shirts and canvas vests to mechanics, ruffled shirts to pirates and silk waistcoats to aristocrats; any of these may be worn at any size, and the maker’s own size chart decides the fit. Our how to dress steampunk gives the order of purchase, and steampunk on a budget the prices.
