A steampunk outfit for a woman is built from a blouse, a walking or bustle skirt, a corset, boots and gloves, with a small hat, goggles or a watch on top. As of October 2026, the Historical Emporium pieces for a complete mid-priced look total about $373, and a fuller outfit with a brocade corset, button boots and a cape about $782. The corset deserves the largest share of the budget, and a costume corset is for an evening, not for training.

  • Blouses $54.36 to $71.95; walking and bustle skirts $63.16 to $102.95
  • Steel-boned underbust corsets $79 to $117 from a corset maker; a steampunk brocade style $149
  • Ladies’ boots from $63.95 to $296.10; wrist gloves $11.95
  • The bustle had two fashions, c.1868 to 1876 and 1883 to 1889
  • Edwardian lady motorists wore dusters, veils and low-crowned hats, which suit an aviatrix

A lady who would dress steampunk has the happier problem of abundance: the Victorian wardrobe offers more separate pieces than the gentleman’s, and nearly all of them look the part. The difficulty is only choosing and ordering. This page goes through a woman’s outfit piece by piece; the general principles are set out in our guide to steampunk clothing, and the beginner’s order of purchase in how to dress steampunk.

Of Character, Before Clothes

As with any steampunk costume, the persona decides the rest. A lady of society wears the Victorian-style blouse, walking or bustle skirt, corset, gloves and a day hat. An aviatrix draws on genuine motoring dress: Edwardian women drove in dusters, long veils or scarves, low-crowned hats and goggles with oval lenses set in a leather mask, tinted yellow-orange, green or brown. Other characters (the mad scientist, the explorer, the airship pirate) borrow the same blouse and skirt and change the coat and accessories.

The Blouse

Historical Emporium sells Victorian-style blouses from $54.36 (the Gibson Girl, on sale) to $71.95 (the Florence Lace), with the Abbington at $64.75, as of October 2026. Its guide also notes that a poet or ruffled blouse suits an air pirate. A thrift store is a respectable alternative: waistcoats, long skirts and blouses in a Victorian palette of black, brown, maroon and dark green are the things to seek out.

The Skirt and the Bustle

Two bustles flank a slim interval. The early bustle ran from about 1868 to 1876; a slimmer “natural form” followed until about 1882; the larger, asymmetrical late bustle held from 1883 to about 1889, when sleeves began to puff and it faded. For costume purposes the reader need only decide which silhouette she prefers. A later pattern used a straw-filled cushion sewn into the skirt with steel half-hoops to the hem, according to Fashion-Era.

In practice, one buys a skirt. Historical Emporium lists cotton twill walking skirts from $63.16 to $81.95 and a twill bustle skirt in black or burgundy at $82.36, reduced from $102.95. A blogger who dressed entirely from thrift stores made a bustle from curtains on a ribbon for $3. Petticoats at HalloweenCostumes.com cost $15.99 to $29.99. Our guide to bustle skirts goes further.

The Corset

The corset is the load-bearing piece, and the sources are consistent that fit and boning are where cheapness shows. Luxe Noir, a corset maker, explains the two forms: an underbust begins below the bust, is worn over one’s own bra or blouse, and is its recommended style for beginners; an overbust covers the bust and replaces a bra. Prices as of October 2026:

  • Orchard Corset underbusts, $79 to $117; overbusts, $99.99 to $119
  • Luxe Noir’s steampunk brocade underbust with straps, $149, with eight spiral and six flat steel bones
  • Dark Knight Armoury’s brown brocade underbust, $65 to $75, with ten spiral and four flat steel bones

On sizing, makers differ. Orchard and Luxe Noir style advice is to measure the natural waist and expect a gap of one to two inches at the back; Dark Knight Armoury says to order 3 to 4 inches below the natural waist. The reader should therefore follow the size chart of the shop she buys from, and not carry a size from one to another. A shorter torso should avoid longline styles, which dig at the hip when seated. The full treatment is in steampunk corsets explained.

A Word on Safety

A costume corset is for an evening, not for training. A doctor quoted by Cleveland Clinic says waist trainers do not permanently reshape the waist, should not be worn overnight or on consecutive days, and should be limited to a couple of hours at a special occasion; breathing difficulty, more reflux or leg swelling are reasons to stop. A corset maker’s own safety page advises consulting a doctor first, loosening the corset at any sharp pain, and never exercising in one. We offer no medical advice beyond what those sources say.

Boots, Gloves and Hat

Historical Emporium’s ladies’ boots run from Victorian Faux Leather Ankle Boots at $63.95 through Ladies Leather Victorian Boots at $151.95 to the Cambridge Bicycle Boots at $296.10, with Renoir Button Boots at $252. Ladies’ spats in brocade, velvet and tweed are $39.95. Wrist and fingerless lace gloves are $11.95, opera-length velvet $20.95 and satin $23.95. Of hats, its Ladies Day Hat is $81.95; Edwardian motorists wore low-crowned hats because wind took large ones. See steampunk hats and goggles.
