20,000 Leagues Under the Sea is a classic science fiction novel written by Jules Verne that was published in 1870. Considered to be one of Verne’s best works, this book was also very much ahead of its time with the description of the ship the Nautilus. The story is about an expedition to hunt down a large sea monster and destroy it. The “sea monster” actually turns out to be submarine which is very far ahead of its time, making this book fit right into the steampunk genre. The submarine was created and operated by the notorious Captain Nemo who is determined to satisfy his hunger for knowledge, while at the same time exiling himself from the civilized world. The submarine, the Nautilus, runs on electricity and is also capable of performing research in the areas of advanced marine biology.
When Professor Aronnax and his crew attempt to set off on a voyage to find and destroy the mysterious sea monster, they discover that it is truly not what they thought it was. Aronnax and a crew member named Ned Land end up captured and imprisoned by the reclusive Captain Nemo and the three men end up taking a trip around the world, seeing everything from the lost city of Atlantis, to a giant octopus, to the South Pole.
Captain Nemo has an advanced knowledge of marine biology and is also a fine engineer who created the electric propulsion and complex navigation systems of the Nautilus. He is also a master at navigation and has taken on some of the most difficult submarine passages in the sea. With all this being said, it’s no wonder this book has remained wildly popular even today. It’s also not surprising that fans of science fiction and the Steampunk genre love to portray the famous Captain Nemo for Halloween, cosplay, or other costumed occasions. This video depicts a Captain Nemo deep sea diver costume that was created for wearing in a DragonCon competition. It comes complete with an “air tank” that actually has a working fan system to pump air into the costume to bring in fresh air and prevent carbon monoxide buildup while wearing the mask.
The entire costume took 724 hours to entirely complete and the costume weighs in a 65 pounds. While this is not a tutorial type video, it does show the details of the costume that will provide inspiration for you to come up with your own creative ideas on how to recreate this look. This is a tutorial video on how to create an authentic looking deep sea diver’s helmet using an EVA floor mat or a camping mat, some hot glue, and a few other readily available items. There is a link available with the video where you can buy the pattern for this project.
Once you have purchased the pattern it is now time to print it out. This will take multiple sheets of paper which will need to be taped together. Cut out the pattern pieces then arrange and trace them on the mat. Proceed to cut the pieces out. The video goes on to show you hot to glue the seams of the flat pieces together to create a round diving helmet. Video takes you through a step-by-step process.
